When I set up my 5g nano reef cube the whole thing cost me about $400 including cured live rock. After "filling" it I probably ended up spending $500 - $550.

adamz - Welcome to the board

what size would you like to try out? 10 gallon or less, 10 gallons or more?
Thomas
Nudibranch - where have you been hiding for nearly two years? Welcome back. What is your 5g nano made out of acrylic? Got any pics?

Adamz, - Yeah a 10 would be fine. A lot better than my shot at a 5g Read on to find out why.
Thomas, - Yeah its good to be back, I wish I had pics to share but sadly, I went on a a snorkeling trip to Belize. Had a great time and had my Dad take care of my tank while I was gone. It was pretty simple, just top off evap water (I live in Arizona its a big problem) w/ the RO DI water sitting in the jug next to the tank. Well I came back from the trip 7-8 days later and the whole thing had crashed and was beyond repair I was missing about 3" of water (RODI jug was full) my salinity was through the roof and almost everything was dead so I tried to revive w/ no luck and scrapped the whole project. I had a 18 watt PC lighting (1 Actinic and 10k?? no sure about that one), did weekly H2O changes cuz I didn't have a skimmer (had yet to find one small enough) and for circulation I was using a Rio (I have found the error of my ways). I had a 2-2.5" DSB with about 5lbs of cured live rock. It was beutiful though, had some mushrooms, an unknown frag of SPS ($10 miscellaneous tank at LPS) that did wonderfully, button polyps and I forget what else. I got discouraged and scraped the idea, but now I want to get back into it again on a larger scale (30g???). So yeah, no loss will keep this fish nut down forever!

To answer your main question it was a glass tank, I think it was an Oceanic but I can't remember.
P.S. I really regret throwing away all the equipment, then again the "non-living" equipment was only $150 of the set up. I might still do a 10g inbetween my 30g endever.

Nudibranch,
Out of curiosity, what did you have in your 5g tank? $500 sounds like a lot to spend on a 5gal.

The 500 might be a little bit of a high estimate it's been almost 2 years now...the corals alone cost almost $200 though (including a clean up crew, marco algae etc...), I had to purchase all the frags I wasn't taking them from an existing tank. Then the ligt housing (didn't come with appropriate bulbs) 18W pc (9w act/9w 10k??? not positive if it was 10k) lights, tank, LR and LS all that was an easy $200. The you can add testing kits. It's probably a little more than the acerage price, the LFS I went to was a little more $$ then the others but I support them because they quarentine all the fish for about 2 weeks (longer if necessary and they quarentine all inverts for 24hrs) before releasing them for sale. Might have been a little steep but knowing the quality livestock I was getting made it worth any extra $$
