starting my 10g nano

Well, I set it up this weekend... what will become my 10g nano. Right now all it is is a tank with a small powerhead, hanging filter, and water, but eventually... mmmmmmm, nano, ahhhh.
Anyways... I'm going to go with LS, and I'm wondering how much of it I should plan on using. SWF sells it in 20lb and 40lb boxes, but I have no idea how far it will go. I'm hoping for something in the range of 3-4" deep bed. Whadya think?

This is my experience and should be taken as such :)
Anyhow, I have tried the aragAlive from Carib-Sea and was not impressed as far as live sand goes, however, I was impressed with the Natures Ocean Live Sand. If you were to buy store bought i would get that. I have never purchased live sand from SWF , but I would make sure that it is right out of the tanks. I purchase my LS from a local store here that has great LS and typically I will add my Carib Sea Reaflor Special Grade then add about 1/10th or so of live sand and I usually never cycle. On my new 150 gallon I added about 200 lbs of special grade, and 20 lbs of live sand from the LFS along with about 45lbs of live rock.
HTH.

Hey, good luck on the nano - i set up a 7gal nano a few weeks ago, and it's doing GREAT!
For mine, i put about 3" or crushed aragonit as a bed, and seeded it with a few pounds of LS from my LFS. The bag of aragonite i got was 15 pounds, and i didn't quite use all of it, if that helps you figure out how much you should buy.
Well, GOOD LUCK! i hope it turns out good for you, they're tough :p

hey if it is any help I got 20lbs of Walt Smith live sand in my 20g reef and it was enough to cover the bottom about 1-1 1/2 inches deep. This is some great stuff to very white and very fine!! I personally don't like the deep sand beds but that is my personal opinion. I have a all glass 7g bow with a reef setup and I only have about 1" of live sand and 7lbs live rock with a skilter 250 for filtering and protein skimming, works great!!
Hope this was some help and good luck!!

If I were to set up a mini or nano reef setup, would I need a protein skimmer? My lfs has one and it does not but all it has in it is fish.

In my 7gal i have about 10lbs of LR and 3" of LS that takes care of al the biological filtration. I also have the equivalent of a hang-on-back filter (just a floss-filter i guess) that's built onto the tank. I don't have a skimmer and everthing is doing fine - all my levels are perfect, and i have a few happy fish and some happy corals that are all doing great.
The only thing you really have to watch out for are your levels - you have to test more frequently than in a large tank, and regular water changes also help if you plan on having fish and corals... :p
I also have a question.. my catalina goby will chase my rainford goby if he gets too close. My catalina was in the tank first, but i didn't think they were territorial. He won't just go after my rainford for no reason, just if the rainford comes too close to him. is this normal and will this behavior go away? my rainford generally hides out in the rockwork and doesn't bother my catalina much, but when he does...

It is possible to setup up a nano without a protein skimmer. However, you must keep up with the weekly water changes.

For a 4" sand bed you will need roughly 32 pounds of sand.
Hope this helps.

Another option you might want to try is Cutting board. It is pretty much the same as a bare bottom tank but isn't as ugly IMO.
