startup cost?

what equipment would i need to start up a 48x15x12 tank for marine fish only. i intend to buy the medium range of everything i need. i would like to spend no more than $550/$600 if possible.

I'm not too sure, but it sounds like you want a 55 gallon tank. For fish only I would recommend getting a 75gallon wet/dry system, a 150-200 watt heater and a UV sterilizer if you can afford it. It would be great if you can find a predrilled tank, so that you didn't have to hang the collection box for the wet/dry. Depending on the price of your stand. You should be able to stay within your budget.
Tank: $100-150
Stand $20-200
Wet/Dry $100 w/Pump
Heater: $20-30
UV Sterilizer $75-100
Salt and Substrate: $40-60

55 gallon tank from Walmart with stand = $199
W/D filter = $140
Heater = $30 (150 watts)
Substrate = $40-$100 depending (LS/CC)
Skimmer = Prizm $80 but others range $70-???
LR = we started with 25 lbs = $100 but you can get this for much cheaper...

get teh tank, sand, and lighting, i would go with pc, if you are looking at cost and want a fish only tank about 100 to 150(for lights)
ad a decent skimmer and some powerheads, prizm would be fine for a 55,a nd can be bought for under 100
add to that a 4 to 6 inch sand bed(about 10 bucks) adn seed witha bag of live, $30
now all you need is lr(if you want it)and some fishes(after the cycle)
