starvation??

my undulate is really shy. It won't eat if I'm in the same room. The first 2 weeks I had her she would only come out at night and before I turned the light on in the morning.
How does your triggers body look? Is it sucked in?
Is the entire eye cloudy or just spots? both eyes?

I don't think you have to worry yet. Triggers get extremely skinny before they will starve. The eye injury could be from the net when you bought the undulate. Keep trying to offer food and keep water quality high. There is a good possibility that you undulate will be alright.

how long can the thing live though without eating..i am about 20 feet away from the tank right now and i can see him swimming around but as soon as i get close he hides and doesnt get to eat all the other fish eat it. what do i do??thanx

Do you have a qt tank? I'm still going through the same thing with my undulate. I had her in a 120G with a titan and a niger and the two triggers ganged up on the undulate. Nipped at her fins and body. She has a cloudy eye and damaged fins.
I put her in a qt tank by herself with the salinity at 1.009. She hides out most of the day behind the filter. She only comes out when I feed her.
If you had a qt tank you could treat the undulate's eye with antibiotics and a 50% daily water change. Also, there wont be any competition for food.

My undulate has eaten like a champ since day one....I had to keep him with my picasso for a week while his tank was finishing, but he ate fine in there as well. I agree, a qt to treat him and get him eating well sounds like the best bet. Bo

He is in a 72 with a niger and a tomato clown...he is much bigger than both of them ( i am not expecting the niger and tomato to be in there long). I think the eye bubble is from a wound because whenever i get close he takes off like a mad man and i wouldnt be surprised if he hit something. I dont have a qt tank so what would be the cheapest way to set one up. Or do you think i could maybe just wait this one out??? thanks

the cheapest setup is a 5G bucket with an air pump and air stone. you can use pvc to make a safe place for the trigger to hide. if you keep your house warm you don't even need a heater. a 10 G would be ideal. a 10 G tank is only $10 at most LFS. you'll have to change water daily.
I think you could wait for a couple of days. triggers are really hardy and not likey to starve if food is in the tank.

i think that i will set that up tomorrow. what is the name of the mdicine i need to treat him with??? thanks!! thanks for all the replies guys!!

there are lots of medication options. check with your local lfs to see what they sell. one option is to try dipping the undulates food in selco, garlic, or some other vitamin supplement. that will help with the immune system. Maracyn 2 is often used for bacterial infections which I think is what your undulate has. if the lfs has freshwater Maracyn 2 just double the dose. Other options are nitrofuran or kanacyn.
