Well, I am getting a shark in a month or 2 also. Since the ban on Leopard sharks (which I found is true from my LFS), I have decided to go with a Grey Smoothhound. Very active much like a Leopard shark. You may want to look into one of those. However, I think in a 180, you could only keep in for a year or so, I could be mistaken, sicne I am no shark expert.

Well, my LFS told me that it is illegal to collect them now. I guess the reason is the way that they were catching them. They would catch a preg mother shark, and slit it's belly open and take the babies or eggs or however they bare their young. My LFS still has 2 that they keep for their tank and they said the last one they sold was for $250 and if they sell anymore they will be $500. But they said that their fish supplier got busted for this. And this fish store has the biggest selectin you have ever seen, they aren't some nickle and dime org trying to make money off me.

Well, I haven't had much experience with banded sharks, being that mine just hatched today, but he seems to be pretty active though already.. not eating yet, bu still active... Ones Ive seen in pet stores have been pretty active too. Yeah, I see some sit at the botom sometimes.... but as for right now, with my shark... he seems to be active... very cute too.

In all honesty, my bamboo is not much more active than my SFE. He comes out and swims more when he's hungry, and is a bit more active at night (nocturnal feeder).
Leopard sharks are not banned. Its been my experience that the only people who say they have been banned, are the people who are having trouble finding them. I'm not saying that they're the easiest shark to find, but just that it's a matter of being in the right place, at the right time.
Sadly, the story about baby sharks being cut from the mothers womb is true. But this doesn't mean its the only way they are collected. There are still plenty of reputable people out there who have the proper permits, and methods for harvesting these sharks.

In the 11 monthes I've had bamboos I can say that they are not nearly as inactive as most people say they are(at least IME). People discribe them a "boring" and "they lay around all day" which is not true. They don't swim consantly like black tips but they do swim.(slowly). I think the secret is to feed them sparingly. I feed mine about every 3 days.
Also if you ever find they are just sitting there stick a piece of shrimp in the tank and they'll swim all over it. Mine lay around usually the day after I fed them.
