i have been wanting to get a california stingray. i have a 210 gallon tank. i currently have a:
blue hippo
yellow tang
diamond goby
mated pair of tomato clowns
porcupine puffer.
Do you think i would be ok buying a stingray? i have a big sandy area for him. please let me know what you all think?

i replied in the other forum to this post but heres the copy
a "big" sandy area wont do .. most of your tank need ot be bare with not alot of live rock.. also you cant keep stingrays with puffers. You also need a chiller for cali rays because they are a cold water species, although there is sucess keeping them in warmer waters they should really be kept in a cold water tank.
i had two of them and gave them to my friend who has a cool water system since i felt bad keeping them in a warm water tank...
the goby and clowfish will also be an easy meal for a cali ray!

I've got a cali ray with a naso, sailfin, unicorn, wrasse, panther grouper, lion, little puffer and a 1 inch GREEN CHROMIS! I think if you keep it well fed no problems, my tank is a 240 and you do need to give it swimming room not just sand but walls to go up and down and lots of room to explore. I've had mine for 5 months (8 inches in August) and he's already getting to big for my tank. It is my fav out of all the fish in my 3 tanks, I hand feed him nightly! GOOD LUCK

hey lucky
not calling you out but wondering .. i read a post by you on 10-11-06 that said you wanted to get a 240 gallon tank, or that you were thinking of upgrading..
if you had these fish for 5 months that post from you was only a few months ago??
also that a short time to add all those big fish , what kind of filtration you running , it must be pretty good?
be carefull with the puffer and wrasse , IMO iw ould take them out or they will pick at your ray pretty bad , no matter how small they are.
you think we can see some pics of your setup? i always love to see other agressive setups and filtration so ic an get ideas on how everyoen runs their systems..and it sounds like you have a nice tank going
thanks.. i dont mean to sound rude or like a jerk i was just wondering

puffers and triggers IMO do not work with rays or sharks. I have yet to read any thing that says you can. They will pick out the eyes and you will have a blind fish. I have seen a few blind cat sharks by people who did not listen to the fish store and did ZERO research. puffers are cool but rays are out of the norm. you need to have a ray only style tank. Hope you'll think about that.

I have 2 porcupine puffers and 2 rays and also a trigger both pairs get along fine most of the time but the puffers get alil frisky frome time to time usualy at dinner time the girl puffer gets chased once a day the man ones just makin himself feel like a man but they stay busy between them and pretty much ignore the rays mostly grocery shopping and wutnot.my puffers are kinda skiddish around the rays and tend to drive away or back up slowly the rays aint gonna just let the puffer just eat it they can hold there own never had a problem between them. have to keep them all fed varywell or ill lose a small fish for like 7 bucks i keep around to test my feeding job trigger is more in it for the easy kill or an oyster,so in my experiece "pairs" and size makes a difference ill get some pics

yeap so i had 2 puffers 2 stingrays and a trigger yupp guess wut happend... donno who did it but stingray gets his tail chopped off and eyes pecked out so no stingrays with triggers or puffers but puffers and a trigger do good together IMO but my puffers are bigger then my trigger, puffers being 7" still got 1 ray hada set up a second tank for him how not cool but 120 bucks a ray ones better then none so now he is lonely and wifeless :( the puffers think tail is food and they get along fine, then you go to sleep wake up dead ray takes puffer one nibble, maby today maby in 2 weeks but ...
