stingray

No it is not the real thing, but look what I found for my 10 gal. The Elite Stingray is something new here but maybe not to you all. I went to buy a powerhead today and they suggested this to me. It is a second filter which I could use plus a powerhead in one. It is so quiet and really turns that water, it has a dial to redirect the water too. My nano is rocking now. The only draw back it its size. But hey, it really is not that bad, easy to clean and has side baskets that hold the charcoal. I have nothing to loose, been running this tank for the past 1 1/2 years with just the Aqua Clear Mini filter so this will really make things better. I would not put one of these in anything bigger than a 10 gal, it is suggested for a 15 gal but I think this is perfect for the 10 myself.
The other new addition, Tufa rock with my live rock. The live rock I have had for the same time the tank has been running 1 1/2 years. The price of live rock here it just crazy, many of the salt tanks in the LFS are using the Tufa i noticed. This size of rock which I weighed is 4 lbs. The cost of it live to buy here is $40.00 CDN. In time it to will become live.
Updated, since I got my short spined urchin my rocks are pink once again. They were so dark and grungy looking and some still are but man that urchin works wonders. I know it might eat my coraline algae but if the rocks look like this I sure don't mind.
Just thought I would show a picture of my 10 gal nano which sure needs more rock in time.

I've never heard of it, but hey if it works go for it! It could be the picture, but it looks like you can use more surface movement.

Can you hide it with LR, or will that affect water circulation?

The picture is not the best I have to admitt. The water level is right to the top too. When I get up close to it things are just a moving in there now. I don't want to be blowing things around in this tank but I am quite happy with this filter. I could hide it with rock, you see the pointy part is where the filter is, the water gets sucked up through there up into another big sponge through the charoal and out the top. The blue part is where the water comes out. There is a dial there to direct the flow of water, straight ahead, the left to the right and any place inbetween. Quite a neat thing I must say. Eventually I will try and hide it, have to be careful not to plug that point part as that is wehre the water gets suck up from. It is a 100% improvement from what I had going. Will keep you posted.

Hey, at least I can say I have a Stingray...... :hilarious
That is what they are called. Yes hopefully in time it will either be covered in algae or with more rock I will be able to hide it. Either way it does not bother me and I am happy right now with it and my new rock.
Simple things for simple minds....... :jumping:

Debbie... is that a pincushion urchin?
Does he bother your corals?
What do you feed him?
Your tank is so cute! Post more pics!! :joy:

They call it a "short spined urchin", I don't know if that is the same thing as a pincushion.
The color is pink/purple, they told me that they are the smallest of the urchins and will not get any bigger than what it is. I have not been able to find this exact color/type of the internet.
Does not bother my corals at the moment, does a wonderful job at cleaning my rock. Urchins are claimed to take all your coraline algae off your rocks so if you have pretty pink rocks it will disappear with an urchin. As you can see mine are pink in areas in the picture. Before I put the urchin in the rocks were black, I am very happy with the job it is doing at cleaning the rocks.
I am not so happy but find it so funny with what it does to my smaller rocks, they will move them around, but nothing major it is just turning it over to clean all the algae off. But the other morning I awoke to this character packing my two feather dusters, 3 empty shells and some small very small pieces of rock ontop of himself. They can decorate themselves pretty scary looking sometimes. So that is about all the stuff it does, nothing is harmed just sometimes I need to put things back in place.
As for feeding, have not had to do this yet. But I am going to get some algae tabs tomorrow to supplement. I tried shrimp pellets and it would not take them. I like to make sure my critters and fish have enough to eat in tanks.
Thanks for the comments about the tank. I am not really proud of it yet, need more rock but that comes in time. I am really enjoying the fish, star, and urchin though. This is what I really wanted was a FOWLR even though I have some mushrooms in there. I don't plan on adding anymore corals but more rock instead, just a look that I prefer.
Hope this answers your questions, maybe Ophiura can better identify my urchin better.

Well, here is a picture of my urchin up close. When I do a search this is what I have found.
Short Spined Sea Urchin- (Mespilia globulus) smaller than a tennis ball this brightly colored urchin has very small spines and lots of tube feet. It has a habit of decorating itself with pieces of shell or other debris inthe water. It is less destructive than other urchins and may feed on algae on the tank walls, almost always in view.
This certainly does describe my urchin , the only thing is that the picture of these urchins has a beautiful blue band, mine does not and is purple in color. So this makes me believe now that it might me a "Purple pincushion Urchin" (Strongylocentrotus purpurantus) but mine has short spines. Maybe someone here can properly identifiy this urchin for me.

Hmm.. just did a search, looks like Mespilia Globulus is my OTHER favorite urchin - the blue tuxedo. They've got blue spineless stripes going vertically down their bodies- like a blue and spiny beach ball. (I found a good pic - it's the first one).
The second one you mention (purpuratus) looks more like your little guy... I found a pic of these too, soooooooo cute! (he's the one in the second picture). They come in all shades of purple, and they don't get very big at all... hhm... you've given me quite a bit of food for thought...
thank you, thank you!! :joy: :joy: :joy:

Speg are you asking about the post from Snailheave?
Or
My type of urchin?
If it is my type of urchin I really cannot answer that, mine has not bothered any of my mushrooms. Just grazes around them, I have seen it ontop of the mushrooms and thought it was eat it but when it move nothing happened. So I guess they are okay??????
I also have a chocolate chip star, it was ontop of my mushrooms too and they are not reef safe at all. But I feed mine a small bit daily so I think this is why it is leaving my shrooms alone. Cannot say the same for my snail, but I really think it was dead anyways.j
