Walleye-
Very pretty ray! It's a female, right? (I don't see the "graspers" near the tail.) I have a few questions for you (other ray keepers please chime in too!) Is that a gravel bottom? In your opinion, is the footprint the determining factor for tank size (Will any height over 18 inches be okay?)? Has anyone had SW rays breed? What is that green plant in there?
:notsure: I really don't mean to hijack the thread!

I have a saltwater ray in a 125 gallon. THe footprint is the important part not the capacity. You want it to be wide enough that the ray can turn easily and plenty of open room for them to cruise. There are some rays that will bred in captivity like the yellow ray but they need plenty of room and good water quality to bred.

by footprint, do you mean the surface area of the sandbed? I assume so? I have been shopping around for tanks, and I really havent found any with too much surface space.

LOL - JCRIM!!

Why is it *doing* that, though? Was it just a pre-flight moment that you happened to catch?
Either way, really funny looking!
I'm thinking of two yellow-spotted, since I believe they're the smallest. Dreaming of a 96" x 24"...

Actually, he was coming over to say hello... LOL. My ray kind of follows me around the tank looking for food. Believe it or not, that is also a yellow ray... it changed colors when I put it in my tank against the black sand.
BTW, love your avatar, I have a mastiff myself. She's a sweet girl.

JCRIM- I've lurked here for a long time, and I've drooled over yours before. Didn't think it was a yellow, though! I'm going to be using the DSB from my 90 for the upgrade, so no black sand for me. And ... thanks. That's the love of my life, Riddick. (Yes, I'm a Vin Diesel fan. His early stuff is worthy. I swear! ) He's a Fila Brasileiro, Brazilian Mastiff. And he is not sweet. LOL. Well, to me and mine he is, but he likes to try and eat strangers, which is a big plus in my book. I never realized how much bigger his head is than mine until my friend took that pic a few months ago! I've actually been doing Mastiff rescue for a while, and I have an old female Fila, too. After I aquire myself a bigger tank, I'll be hunting down a female Cane Corso. I run at night, and nobody messes with me!
I'd love to see pics of yours.
Walleye - I love the pics, esp the ones of the underside. Such graceful, interesting animals. A Coral Beauty would add some much needed color! I haven't even started researching what should be in there with my future rays... what won't nip, I mean. I'd like an eel in there. I'm in love with tessas, but they're just too big and aggressive.
Do you both hand feed? Have either of you ever been "stung"? Is that the proper term? "Barbed"? LOL

I regularly handfeed mine. I've had other stingrays before and they seem to take to it really easily. I've never been stung and never really felt like there was a threat. IMO the time to be most cautious is when they're buried and you don't really notice where they are.
