Hey Jcrim and Walleye, I appreciate all the information and first hand experience from your stingrays, thanks a bunch.

SMoney, I'm assuming you know to check for fin-curl when you pick out a sting-ray. This disease is common in captive stingrays and is ultimately fatal. If the fins are curled it's as good as dead, don't buy it.

Make sure there very acive when you buy it also. The death curl is when its already to late, almost never any hope. The majority of rays I have had all hand feed and become very tame in a month or so of captivity. This little guy comes to my hand as soon as I put it in the tank for head rub!

also about getting stung. Its not really a sting more like a cut from the barb. I have never noticied any sign of aggression from a captive ray. I have been cut by one when netting and transporting a ray and it was nothing, just like getting a paper cut. Maybe I was just lucky, who kows?

By the Death curl thing, do you mean when the ends of their wings are like curled up? I have never seen this, but when I get a tank for one, I will check for that.
The Barb sting is probably like a jelly fish sting. I actually get stung alot by jellys when I go to the beach over the summer, and I talked to a lifeguard about stingray stings, and he said that you have to run it under hot water and that it hurts really badly!

From my experience with them in the wild: A barb sting is not like a jelly sting. Man-o-war stings don't even compare (maybe aussi box). First of all, its not a sting but a stab. I had a friend step on one while paddling out into the break. His foot was propperly messed up. Bled forever. :scared: These barbs are saw-like and sharp, not to mention capable of breaking off inside you. Think of a splinter the size of a bic pen. I've never heard of anyone getting hit that didn't step on the animal, but I'm sure it is possible. They tend to let you do the work of impaling yourself on the barb rather than bending it around offensively. As far as being in the aquarium - I don't know anything about them. I wouldn't sweat it, though - they seem docile enough.

Sorry for making the thread stray, guys!
JMICK-
That's me and my brat prince, Riddick, and yes, he is a Fila. You familiar with the breed?

About the stinging/stabbing/barbing : Aside from the pain of the actual cut, since they are listed as venomous, I was wondering if it's like some other stings, and soaking in white vinegar dissipates the "sting"... Not that I'm planning on careless handling or harassing the animal- I'm just trying to do my research and be prepared.
Also (and I'm not trying to sound like a SouthPark epi or anything!), what does stingray poop look like? I mean, will it be obvious that it's poo? I'm sorry I even need to ask that!
Do you scoop it... or syphon it...?

Very familiar with the breed! My wife and I had a male for almost 3 years before we lost him (died of bloat, possible the worst experience of my life….went to work in the morning and came home to a dead pet who clearly died a horrible death, thinking of it still brings tears to my eyes.). He was a great dog, was my shadow around the house, when I’d get up he’d get up and follow me around the house. We’ve been looking at the possibility of getting another but finding a good breeder is difficult. I have a picture of him in the Aquarium section under the show off your babies thread.

JMick- Sorry to hear about your handsome boy. Thankfully, I have yet to experience bloat, but I think once you've loved and been loved by a Fila, you never forget that bond (yeah, yeah, get out your tissues people!) I work with a Fila rescue group (Which explains why I have three of them wandering around my house right now!), and would be glad to talk with you about adopting! We have dogs of every age, and you might be surprised how many young dogs and puppies we get in. In the case that adopting didn't pan out, there are many breeders (the reputable ones, IMO) that are involved in rescue of this magnificent breed! All the dogs that go through our rescue are screened and UTD on health issues. I don't see where I can PM you, if that's even an option, and I don't want to clog up this thread more than we already have (Sorry!), so you can email me anytime at GoSpeedGrrrl AT yahoo.com . I can give you my "official recue email address" from there if you decide to look into it.
