Stitches or not?

Wow...some of you guys are freakin' me out.
Anyway, after further interogations (of his older brothers), turns out his head did not hit the steel frame. He fell and his face hit the springs, so apparently one of the springs retracted and ripped the skin. So I'm not as worried about blunt force trauma now.
Looks much better tonight though. It has closed up nicely, although he has some black and blue starting to form.
Lets see if this pic works....

This will not be a politically correct answer, but that looks like something that if we had as kids we would down a glass of Kool-Aid and keep on going.

That was my whole point to the wifey....but she almost puked when I pulled the skin apart to see how deep it was.
Anyway, I just wanted to get some assurance that I wasn't being a total neglectful Dad by not going to the ER.

It really doesn't look that bad at all. The swelling will go down. Just keep it clean.

I agree. If the pupils are even in size and responsive to light and he is not complaining about 'blurry' vision or headaches I would let it go on my child.
Disclaimer......I am a 'guy'....My wife, the RN, would have seen the ER doc, our pediatrician and the cosmetic surgeon within 15 minutes of the incident.
Seriously, IMHO, it should be fine and appears to be healing already.

Actually closing very nicely. Stitches would be put it to keep it looking exactly like it does now. Should heal without much scarring. Vit E applied topically over the area will keep it moist and help to prevent scarring. You want to keep something on for the next couple of weeks while it heals. Vit E

can be broken open and the ointment placed over the wound. Aquaphor is usually a second choice. Work in an oral surgery practice where we also do some cosmetics. We take excess tissue off eyelids to tighten them. Likelyhood it wasnt as deep as expected, otherwise you would have seen is eyeball right under the area. Eyelids are thin. Hope he's doing ok!

Thanks everyone. He seems to be doing fine. Got a pretty nice black eye, but the gash has closed up and looks clean. You guys have been some pretty good support/advice here, so I'll try this again next time (with 3 boys, something like this is usually a monthy, sometimes weekly, occurance).

Glad he's doing well. Kids are amazing the way they bounce back. We can take tons of teeth out of kids for ortho extractions and they are back up the next day without missing a beat. Adults are a whole other story! I think I did put P.I.L.L.S now that you mention it!
