stock list question.

I will be setting up my 35 gallon hexagonal tank in a few months and I was wondering what would be a good stock list? The tank setup will be; 70 lbs LR, 35lbs LS, 1 Prizm protien skimmer Current USA satellite PC lighting 10,000k daylight w/ 460nm Actinic and Current Lunar light,2 ZooMed 228 Powersweep Powerheads totaling 540 gph. Clean up crew will be; 35 blue leg hermits, 18 Astera snails, 2 Tiger Tails cucumbers, 1 serpent or brittle star and 1 peppermint shrimp. I will possiblely move my two perc clowns so I can use my ten gallon as a small QT. I would like to have a colorful tank. I also would like to not spend a lot of money on fish and save it for coral. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance for any help.

Some ideas :
Royal Gramma
Firefish
Clown Goby or Neon Goby
Court Jester Wrasse
Flame Hawkfish

Does the Court Jester Wrasse have a different name? I have researched the others but cannot find any info on that particular wrasse. I would love to have all of them but cannot keep the firefish, unless I can find a place that makes custom hoods for hex tanks. The hood it came with will not work with any SW lighting setup.

Hi, If you have not already purchased the tank I would look into some other size as the 35 gallon hex tanks that I have seen are the very deep ones with a smaller than normal surface area and bottom area. This poses several problems. First off it is not too good for the fish not having much lateral swimming area or surface area for gass exchange. Secondly it is difficult to place many corals close enough to the light as light intensity decreases rapidly with the square of the distance. It can be done, but it would be better to get a different shape and maybe a little larger as you will soon want a bigger tank once the saltwater addiction hits. There is a nice 45 gallon tank by Oceanic that is a modified longer hexagonal tank that would be better than the 35 hex if you are talking about the really deep tank. As for colorful fish a flasher wrasse is small and colorful as is the royal gramma. Good luck, Lesley

The SW bug has already hit. thats why i am making this size upgrade. The tank is currently a FW. It is actually not too deep about 2.5 -3 feet. I selected it because it was wider then mos hex tank, but still fit in a corner without taking up much space. I plan on getting a much bigger tank after I buy a house. Right now I am renting and a large tank if I had to move would be to much. It was hard enough moving my 10gal when we moved here. My plan is for a 210 reef tank, I am going to build the stand and canopy myself to save a bit of money. That is a long way away. Oh to dream

I think I'll do it as a FOWLR. Aquacultured LR, so a few corals but mostly fish. thanks for the suggestions.

35 hermits and 18 asteras are very excessive. If you want hermits, put them in your fuge and 10 will do. About 4 asteras will do for snails. Wait untill your diatom bloom is over. A 35 hex is limited. It is taller than it is long. You will be good with stacking the rock high and sticking with smaller fish that like to pick out spots in the rock but are not real active swimmers.

The inverts come as part of the total package of LR and LS I plan to buy. I guess I could place some of the hermits and snails in my ten gallon since there won't be much of anything in there.

Being you have not bought it yet, what package are you buying? You certainly don't want to buy your new LR and inverts together unless you have a place to cure the rock while you care for the inverts. I was wondering how you had fit 35lbs of LS and 70lbs of LR into a 35 gallon hex.

1) I am getting it from a different site so I cannot say where on here. It was recomended by my LFS, it's where they get the LR they sell in their store. 2) The company will first ship me 1/2 the LR then after the cycle I call them and they send the remaining rock (decorator) and the inverts. Every thing is shipped dubble baged and in water (including the LR) to prevent die off. I could send the address to you if you like.
