Stocking Water - Beginner

Hi,
I am planning to start setting up a saltwater tank and I was wondering if I can get water and sand directly from the sea. Will it be ok? My next question is, can I store water in barrels for weeks? Will the seawater turns bad after some period?
Thanks,
Kris

You really shouldn't. You don't know what is in sea water. It is usually polluted close to shore.

Best bet is buy salt water already made at a LFS or buy the salt and mix your own......Same for the sand.........buy it from a lfs or online source, so your on the safe side with not acquiring unwanted problems.
Saltwater will keep for a fair amount of time if its kept circulating with a power head or an airstone, and kept out of direct sunlight........Odds are it will have to be adjusted for sg due to evaportion but its a simple process......

Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I forgot to tell you that in my country, the LFS doesn't sell the special ocean salt. This is because, here it is not allowed to keep saltwater fish, therefore it is useless for them to import the special salt. As I am interested and want to keep saltwater fish, I will get the fish from the sea but my problem is the saltwater. That is why I was planning to get the water and the sand from the sea.
What can I do to keep these wonderful fish? Any advise.
Thanks.

Get some scooba diving gear!

You can use water from the ocean but I would suggest going miles off shore to get it. You will have less of a chance of getting contaminated water.
Also remember that fish cought in the wild and put in a tank will be stressed. They are used to the ocean and are now stuck in a shoebox.

What kind of system are you planning on having?
For fish only, sg of 1.020 or so is fine, but for reef tanks, you need to be around 1.025.
You need to determine if the sg of what you are collecting is close to what you want to keep.

You know that if the stores can't sell them it's probably really illegal for you to catch them. I would check local laws.

It has already been stated that it is illegal to house saltwater fish in their country. But as someone posted before, speeding is illegal but people do that.
The way I see it: if you don't get caught it isn't illegal.

speeding is alot cheaper fine.
and collection is probably an even bigger fine than housing them.
