That is a diabola scorpionfish. Cool fish, but not quite a stonefish. I believe the true stonefish are illegal to sell cuz they are so deadly, and to tell ya the truth, they are quite ugly as well. Conogre showed a nice pic of a group of his fihs way back when. You could count 6 fish, but he said there were actually 7. The big rock they were huddled around was indeed the stonefish, lol. Im gonna do a search for pic...

I havent seen any stone fish that max out at 7". It might be something they are calling a stonefish. Thats alot of predatory fish in a 90 gal, just because they are so extremely messy so hopefully you have some really good filtration, especially if you want a tang of any kind. And by the way, bare minimum on a hippo tang is 100+ regardless of what some store trying to make a buck tells you. They are a very fragile tang although not near as bad as some. An Atlantic Blue or kole might do ok provided good filtration and lots of LR to pick on. Oh yeah, Stones are extremely venomous and unless you happen to have some boiling water on hand and ready and plan on the resulting 3rd degree burns from it, kiss your butt goodbye if you get stung. Not recommended.

Sam,
Did you ever get a pic of your "Stonefish". I have to agree that they are an ugly creature and with the whole downside of death if stung I might go with something else. I have a leaf fish, a member of the scorpion family and he has the some really bright blue around his fins and under side of his face.

A little tidbit from Bob Fenner
by and large stonefish are not popular for many good reasons. no a stonefish would not be compatible. The are best kept in a species tank. But I am strongly recommending that you do not get any. For starters, your tank is way too small. Most species found in the trade grow to an adult size that would make the 75gall a very irresponsible tank choice. They do catch and kill anything they can sallow whole and something's that they cannot. It would be unfair and unnatural to taunt the stonefish will any tankmates including venomous lionfish (you are likely to find a dead lion in the mouth of a dead stonefish who choked to death. Some species have venom significantly more potent than lionfish, and the list goes on. Please admire them from afar until you can afford the space for a larger aquarium that will reasonably hold a basketball sized fish.
They get huge..lol

Not a good choice for your tank.
1) tangs are grazers, and with all the frilly bits hanging off of a stonefish, there is bound to be trouble - either the tang gets damaged/eaten or the stone gets stressed constantly/damaged.
2) they demand great respect, and maybe you don't think experience counts for something - but believe me, it does here.
3) feeding - how experienced are you at training lion/scorp type fish to eat prepared? Granted they don't have to eat that often, but providing it live saltwaters feeders will get old quick, and training them onto dead food may take some time.
4) they are not interesting to the majority of fishkeepers/reefkeepers, if you are still considering fish like blue tangs, kole tangs, snowflake eels, and dwarf lions - you most likely are not going to be happy with (and are not ready for) a stonefish. Sounds judgemental, but what the heck, it's true.
BUT! on the bright side, I love the two I have and think they are completely awesome fish, beasty is the word, and very awe inspiring when they go for a swim...
good luck, whatever you decide.

Ya he changes colors, he is cool, but the more I think about it a lot of my little fish have disappeard. Which is fine casue I caught them too, I think him and my eel take turns at eating the little ones, I only wish I could have saw it happen. About the Devil fish, is it dangerous I could not find a exact answear on the internet, is it like the stone fish? Well thanks for all the help, and I say if The Samm wants a stone fish, Let him get one. Whats the worst that could happen.
Thanks ya'll

Raphael, they are not generally sold on the market. My friend actually caught his himself. He lives in Clearwater Florida. They are dangerous like any other scorpionfish is, so try not to touch it, but they are just as shy as most scorpions/lions, so it probably wont attack u, lol. How big is yers? Unless the fish in yer tank were really small, i dont think that fish u have ate them. And u would notice a considerable bulge in its belly if it did. Could I see some more pics of yours possibly?

Actually, now that i look closer at yers, it doesnt have the same tail features as the diabola, so it actually could be a juvy stonefish. Beach Bum, where did u get that monster? It looks different than the one that Conogre has...

Yeah just ignore most information about fish on vender websites, it is usually just trash they write to sell the fish and rarely of any real informative value, vender area of this website included. Forums are where you find true good info. If a vender says that a fish is very difficult to keep then most definately listen, because if they say its hard to keep, it usually means it is extremely difficult.

Ya he ate my fish or my eel did I saw two big lumps in the eels stomac and I had a lot of baby fish that I caught but I look closely and they are not around anymore. The Devil fish or whatever he is is small about the size of a fist. If he is a stone fish thats cool but It kind of looses his appeal if he is not that dangerous. I like the thrill of the catch and all that, I might let him go, I am going to go fishing this weekend I am going to try Night fishing again too catch som Lions I just need a bigger net, I have a ? what about sea Erchins the pins and needles one. I know they pack a sting but are they cool to keep. If it is a scorpion fish I might let him go, and try to look for a real stone fish. Well thanks for all yall help, Having a hobby over here is a good thing, I would definatly go crazy if I did not have something to take my mind off work.
