Hi,
I was wondering if anyone has ever seen a Red stonefish? I know they are mostly black or gray but has anyone ever seen a red one in trade or anywhere els. If so, how much do they go for.
Thanks.

Stonefish are typically only earthtones - this is how they aquired the name - they look like a rock on the sea floor. They do often have patches of color such as red, yellow, orange that looks like coraline growth thus enhancing their camaflouge. They come from Indo-Pacific and Australia primarily so you could find an importer in your area and request that they order one for you - this is NOT a fish that is normally stocked for resale.

You have to be careful of what you are searching for. Stonefish are often labeled as scorpionfish. Have you seen either one? They are quite boring and just sit there. Both will blend into the decor of the tank. That is their nature. Why are you looking for a red? The fish won't stay red, it will blend into it's surroundings.

Thanks for the replys. A friend of mine has a a 4 " red stonefish for sale, its pure red. I am sure it is not a scorpionfish, I have seen scorpionfish before. He is asking 150$ for it, and it is very cool looking. I don't know if they go that expensive. He just looks like the picture below but in red color. Can you tell me if they are easy to take care of? Are they Hardy like the moray eels? Is 150$ a good price?

Honestly I cannot say that it is an amazing price, but i've seen them around that. I have seen a stonefish eat a fish almost bigger than itself. Stonefish are hardy, but if you get stung by one: Bye Bye. If you really want one, I would get a lock for your tank. It may look stupid but better be safe than sorry, right? Good Luck

It is a flasher scorpionfish Scorpaenopsis macrochir. It grows to a little over 5", is venomous, and happy to eat inverts and other fish. The fish is pretty hardy though.

This is a pretty common scorpionfish. Most cary a large price tag. The price range depends on your area. You can always look around. I just looked at some of my price lists. They are labeled as stone fish by my distributor as well.

Technically stonefish ARE scorpionfish, as are lions, zebra fish, turkey fish, etc. They all belong to the family Scorpaenidae. Personally, I would steer clear of stonefish as they are potentially very dangerous. Their venom is extremely potent. I have been spined by my lions and it burns like fire for about half a hour. Stonefish venom is considerably more potent tham that of lionfish venom. Not to mention they are just plain butt ugly
fish! ;-)
