SO...does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep the essentials running in my tank in case of an emergency power outage?
Thanks...
Last year my tank went 5 full days with no power.

I don't even live in a storm area and I've given serious consideration to a generator that would allow the circulation and possibly lighting to stay on for extended periods in event of power outages.

i have a power supply that you can plug into the car lighter and it has plugs like are in the wall...i will use that to power the return pump and heater until power comes back.....my son uses it in the car for his x-box and monitor

I have a couple of 175 watt power inverters that plug into the pick-up truck...I hope it'll be enough to power a few lights and powerheads/heater...at least for a short period of time.Eventually I want a decent generator that can take care of emergency situations longer .

I dont' think the computer battery backups (APC's) will last very long when the power goes out. Not sure though.
I don't know how much generators are, buut, considering how much money and time you have swimming around in your tank, I dont' think it would be a bad investment.
.....or, there is always another alternative. There are those flashlights that you crank to power, one of those and a nice sized wooden spoon can't cost too much.

Small house generators start at around $2500, while whole house generators go for around $5200. I would lose power for days on end so I installed a whole house so if the power goes out I can run anything in the house. Funny thing is ever since I got it I haven't lost power for more tha a few minutes

gas powered generator does the trick.I just went out and purchased one from sears last month.a generator powering 5600 watt runs roughly 800 bucks but its well worth save a few thousand.they do make one that comes on automaticly home depot sells and installs it it runs roughl 2000-3000 dollars this is connected to your utitly gas line so when you power cuts off it automaticly turns on .if you dont have that kind of money which most people dont for a short term use battery opperated live well pumps for at least air flow.keeping the oxigen in your tank is th hardest thing during a power failure.these can be purchased at any fishing tackle store some LFS also sell smaller versions.I keep a couple handy just for shipping fish long distances.

Honda makea a very nice small quiet generator. The're pricy but worth it. If you don't plan on running your house on it, It should be enough to power your entire tank and maybe a few house lights. It's worth the investment to save your tank and fish.

We had a nice week long power outage due to a freekin ice storm this winter! I won't go through that again! A gas generator is good for the long term, but you can use computer back-ups too and they are much cheaper, but make sure it can handle your power load first. Our power goes off so much (tornados, thunderstorms, icestorms)I'm probably going to break down and get a gas guzzler. check you local lawn repair and pawn shops too for used.
