I have a small pistol shrimp, and his snapping can be heard on the other side of the house, and he is very small. Can't imagine how loud a mantis shrimp is. Heres a pic of him with his 2 inch goby. Best pic i got cause he is very camera shy.

Ok so a pistol shrimp takes your tank apart puts a ¼ in piece of glass in its claws and snaps them shut shattering the glass GIVE ME A BRAKE no pun intended think about it, is he ramming the glass with his claws NO you are all saying he is clomping down on the class with his claws YEA RIGHT just how does he do that

a tiny little guy wont do it, but they do get large. this monster would have NO PROBLEM punching through a tank.
They dont go around like some cheesy B movie thumping on the tanks walls like they are searching for a hidden door.
They inadvertantly miss thier target after corraling it into a corner of the tank. They can also be provoked with sticks because many like to see them stike. They have awesome speed and people are too nonchalaunt about them thinking its all urban legend and hogwash.
Will every shrimp take out a tank, absolutley not. But capable certainly. Why risk it unless in a plexy tank.

Read his post again. He didn't say the pistol shrimp could do it, but was judging a mantis shrimp's strength relative to a pistol shrimp. And mantis shrimp don't clamp down with their claw; they use it to quickly smack something and confuse it, which is why they can potentially break glass, split fingernails, break the skin, etc.

You are correct. I re-read and it makes sence to the argument. I agree pistols operate entirley differently and thus while possible, a pistol is not the threat a Mantis is.
Thanks RB

erm... not sure if you read my post.
from wikipedia (i guess i was wrong, although i could have sworn it was them opening their claw):
The snapping shrimp competes with much larger animals, like the sperm whale and beluga whale, for the title of 'loudest animal in the sea'. The shrimp snaps a specialized claw shut to create a cavitation wave that generates acoustic pressures of up to 80 kPa at a distance of 4 cm from the claw. The pressure wave is strong enough to kill small fish [7]. It corresponds to a zero to peak pressure level of 218 decibels relative to one micropascal (dB re 1 μPa), equivalent to a zero to peak source level of 190 dB re 1 μPa at the standard reference distance of 1 m. Au and Banks measured peak to peak source levels between 185 and 190 dB re 1 μPa at 1 m, depending on the size of the claw [8]. Similar values are reported by Ferguson and Cleary [9]. The duration of the click is less than 1 millisecond.
I also never said a PISTOL shrimp could break glass. If you watch how a MANTIS shrimp breaks apart a shell, it is quite possible.
