Stuff For Refugium?

I am about to setup my first refugium, and I would like to know what is the best macros to put inside it? I hear that some things tend to go crazy, which could result in my display tank failing. Is this truly possible? What about keeping the refugium lighted all the time (which is what I'm planning on doing)?

Chaetomorpha aka spaghetti algae is the safest from what I've read. Doesn't attach to anything, doesn't go asexual, grows insanely fast.
I use it in my fuge and love it. Only downside I believe is that most fish won't eat it so it can't do double duty as nutrient export and food. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Makes an awesome pod habitat though.
