This thin layer of something is growing and spreading over my rock. It is brown in color. At first I thought it was algea until it spread over a hole in the rock showing a very defined edge.
Please let me know if anyone knows what it is.

Is It Coraline algae? Coraline will start out as a dark brownish, then turn into beautiful shades of purple, or pinkish red. This is a healthy lgae and no need for alarm, just meand tank is maturing. I dont know about the brown, but my coraline started off as brown too.. weird.. well thats all i can tell ya :happyfish :happyfish

Definitely not coralline. Here's a better pics w/ the 10ks on. I still have no clue what it is, but I'm starting to think its some kind of shroom?

It kinda looks like a shroom. I got a piece of LR with a few tiny shrooms on it. Other than that, leave it to the experts. They should know.

It is a type of algae but I can't remember the name. I have battled it too, there's not really anything that eats it. If left alone, it will eventually cover your rocks. I ended up taking out the rocks and scrubed them really well.

It looks like it is probably lobophora sp. Sometimes naso tangs will eat it, but you also have to consider how big they can get, so a tank well over 100gal is neaded.
Good luck.

Is it a hard crust or soft. I have fire coral (millipora) in my tank, and that is what it looked like initially.
