the restaurant that I work nights at has 2 tanks in it. a 150 and a 220. the 150 is fresh water and looks better thank the 220 which is salt. everytime that I look at the 220 it makes me depressed. I believe that they pay around 800 a month it maintence from some guy who doesn't care to do it right. the lighting is a NO flourescent that is too short, nowhere near enough turn over from the filter and no skimmer with a wet/dry with bioballs in it. I've told my GM to get rid of this guy and at one point they were but of course never did. they have a batfish, golden puffer and a volitan lion. all of these fish are huge to the point that I would say show size if I knew what size that is. sometimes people just don't want to listen to the people that they know love/know about this hobby

The "barbell" tells me someone has access to this tank that shouldn't have,
that makes GFCI's a big need here just for personal safety if nothing else.
I see some great advice here, I like "metweezer's" advice best.

Also I just picked up some Xenia today at the LFS, those little guys would attract some attention for the tank.

IMO The salinty is just another sign those "other guys" were ripping him off.
Good luck, and keep us posted.

update:
the pole in the tank was the owners feeble attempt at doing something for the starving pipefish. i told him they like to hold on to things like seahorses do, so he tossed the pole in..
.
we've come to an agreement-
a hundred bucks a month plus expenses, and i'll keep his tank up.
he's agreed to purchase a new, reef ready tank, a sump, and a new skimmer.
i think i heard a quiet "yes" to a R.O. unit as well.
we've decided the route we will take is a reef(softies and some easy lps).
there are some problems i have to overcome. the largest problem is the built in stand- it's constructed of what appears to be 3 solid beams which are approximately 6"x 24" thick( it looks like something you would use as a lentil, or a load bearing beam that holds up a freaken skyscraper!
)
hes got 2 areas, like the one i took a picture of with the wet dry in it, with a few inch area joining them. so basically, if i want any sort of decent sump with refugium, i'll have to get 2 smaller tanks and drill them and join them with bulkheads and pvc, through that small area.
i have to look at the stand further. maybe i can remove that center beam and just toss a baffled 75 gallon under there.
another small issue is the 48" fixture over the 6' tank. i don't think he will buck up for the new fixture, but he might buck up for a used pendant as a supplement.
he also mentioned that he used to have some tube lights over the tank until the stoner tank maintenance guy got water on the ballast and blew it out. he said he liked them, so maybe i'll talk him into a 4 x 54 watt retro to supplement the 4' fixture.
so it's shrooms, xenia, maybe a wellsophyllia or favia, a frogspawn, and lots of crabs and shrimp and snails.

Doug,
Crabs? You are going to put crabs in there? I thought you didn't like those little buggers. Or is it just hermits that you don't like?

This time he's doing it for someone else...and we like to watch crabs!

I wish our gym had a marine tank.

I'd prolly work out more.
I can't wait to see what you do to it, Mr X. If it's half as nice as what I've seen of your personal stuff, the guy will be very happy. Best of luck in your endeavor.

the old tank is 8 years old and has 2 broken center braces. not to mention, it's not reef ready.
the new tank has corner overflows and i got a 55 gallon which i will convert to a sump.
also, a mag9.5 for return, and an ASM G3 skimmer. 2 koralia 4's will also be inserted.
yes, shrimp and crabs(not hermits) will go in the tank, along with some easy corals.
does anyone want a 4"-5" dogface puffer? it's got to go. 20 bucks.

just glued the baffles in for the sump. those are blue cutting boards. the cheapest, and strongest thing i could find.

Just read over the thread. Looks like its going to be an AWESOME tank makeover. You should have a before and after picture in the end when your done doing all of the mods and things. That was a great idea using cutting boards as baffles. Good luck!

thanks FF. yeah..the cutting boards are easy to use. pretty strong and easy to cut with a circular saw.

Question: Does he budget you or do you do whatever you want? That tank looked pretty sad but I can't wait to see it after your done.

cant wait to see the progress. What type of cutting boards are you using? Good idea. Did you just glue them in with silicone?

he does spend on whatever is necessary, but i'm not trying to hurt him with getting glass cut when we can just glue in cheap cutting boards. btw- they are just ordinary plastic cutting boards from walmart. they ran out of white, so i used the blue...LOL. yep, just used aquarium silicone.
