Stupid question/maybe

Ok all, as blueberry posted, we are turning our 200 into our reef, and the 72 into our aggresive. As you know we had a heat problem and added chillers to the systems, and they work great. But do to the heat in the 200 we grew excessive hair algea. We don't want this in the new reef, so we worked as a team, blueberry would pluck the lr out and I would lightly scrub the hair algea off in a bucket of saltwater. Then bb would put it back into the tank. The lr was never out of the water for more than a few seconds at a time. OK, now for the stupid ???, what I have left in the bucket is highly concentrated algea water, that smells and looks just like phytoplanktin. Could this be benifical to feed our corals or am I asking for more hair algea to grow? Any comments or ideas? Is this just wishful thinking or am I on to something?? Thanks, cya fixit

It might not be a good idea since you don't know exactly what's in there. Nuiscance algae will always be present. The spores are aerial so you can never prevent them from entering your tank water. Sally lightfoots will take care of the hair algae so you and the Mrs. don't have. You can also control nuisance algae by using drinking water when topping-off or mixing (because its usually filtered by reverse osmosis), and introducing macro algae to compete for nutrients. Snails too.

Ok, this is the only time we have ever had a problem with hair algae or nusiance algae and it was all brought on by the temp increase from the vho's. since we are turning it into a reef this weekend our kole tang, and all the reef critters we have along with the four lawn mower blennies, should keep the algae in check. I tell ya we have the kole in the 72 gallon reef now and he keeps it clean as a whistle.I planned on pitching the water anyway but just wanted to get some info. thanks...fixit :)

Hi Fixit - long time no see !
You got it right - ditch the algae water - it may look good - but full of phosphates and nitrates.
The stuff will taint your tank in a nasty way.
Good luck with the change over - sounds very cool !

Hi broomer5. Ya I pitched it before I whent to get my daughter from church, I am on here ever so often, I just get tired of all the games that go on , sometimes they are humerous but many times not. but I guess it will always continue. will be trying to get on more each day, depends on how I feel, wich hasnt been to great lately, always like to come back and browse around hear , can never know two much about this hobby, and pick up some good ideas now and then.good ta hear from ya..cya...fixit :)
