stupid question re: water changes

No such thing as stupid quest. I think most people just siphon the old water with a airline tubing into a bucket. Use gravity: put bucket on ground, suck on one end until water flows in the tube over the tank side, then quickly aim the tube into the bucket. Gravity will keep the water flowing. It takes several tries sometimes, and a mouthful here and there, but you get the picture.
Make up a new batch of replacemetn water using your favorite salt brand. Let replacement water sit for 30 minutes to several hours (until stuff dissolves completely and temp. is close to that in tank). Then siphon the replacement water back into tank. You could just dump the replacement water in tank if you can do it without getting it everywhere and injuring any corals.

Well, i was just curious...that's how i did it. This was my first water change. When i got finished the glass at the top of my tank that's in the middle there's no water..just some air bubbles????? so i'm thinking is there too much oxygen in here and if so how long before my inverts start dying off? I don't know what the heck is going on now but nothing i can do about it tomorrow i guess. Just one more thing to stress out about all night!!!!!

Hey are you from Beaumont Tx? If your salinity and temp. were o.k. then things should be all right. ;)

We got that python thing that hooks to the bathroom sink. It goes right to the sink, (no sucking in water, and no splashing while dumping dirty water out). I don't mind doing it myself with it (but don't tell my husband :D ) . It was well worth the money!

Hi, I just bought a cheap rubbermaid container - 10 gal, a cheap-o powerhead and use an old hearter to prep the water. I would recommend letting it circulate atleast 24 hours before adding the new water. Some people add buffer while mixing, however I wouldn't. The salt acts a decent buffer, then check alk and Ph and adjust the whole system rather than just the prepped water. HTH

we use a python vaccuum that we had from our fw, don't use it to vac, just to siphon out some water, you can even scoop it out with an unused pitcher if you wish, just never use or wash it

oh yeah, we dechlorinate and mix the salt, then leave it run for a couple of days first, before doing the change

Has anyone had this problem??? It's on the second post on this one that i posted on here about the air in my tank. Is this caused by too much oxygen??? I'm really worried about this and could use some help. Thanks.

Hey there. I don't think you have a problem. And if you have ample circulation, there is no problem for sure. The only way to get too much oxygen is to have zero circulation and lots of photosynthesis. But when this occurs, all photosynthesis ceases quickly because CO2 dwindles away. So it is not a stable situation.
The bubbles you are talking about happens to me to. It is normal, especially with a new tank, and I remember having incremental bubble lines the first time I put salt water in my glass tank. BTW, the surface tension of water on glass is very strong--water likes to stick to glass. I don't know how true this is for acryllic, but I imagine it isn't as bad as for glass.

I appreciate your help. I guess i'll just wait a while and see what happens. I don't have acrylic, it's glass. Again, thanks for the info. I appreciate you responding.

I have a 135 gallon and the bubbles i experience are produced by evaporation causing my water level to drop in my wet/dry and my pump taking in air as it returns the water to my tank. You cannot have too much oxygen in your water it just looks like something should be done. Use a algae magnet to get bubbles off of the glass.

Thanks everyone! I'm glad to say as of this evening it's back to normal! It looks soooo much better. You're right reef1, it definitely looked like something should be done. Happy New Year everyone!!!
