I am buying a 59 gal oceanic aquarium with a canopy and wood stand for $200, from a friend of a friend. the tank is empty. is there anyway (other than making the seller fill it up) that i can check for leaks? The tank is glass. i hate to spend $200 and have nothing.

You can take there word it dont leak or just use a water hose and fill it up real quick but i would go for the fill up it can save you the heart ache later and $ 200.00 is a good deal.

There is no practical way of telling if a new or used tank leaks ... unless you fill it with water.
new tanks come with a warranty .. enuf said.
I would ask the seller of the used tank to give you a week "no-leak" warranty on the used tank ..... in writing ... or sit there and watch him fill it with water.

watch it run, before taking it, good question, and as was said, if they won't get a warranty if you want, but me:
if they can't prove it is ok, i would not take it , i would also ask questions like what was in it, any problems(disease), if so what did they use to treat it with, if they used copper based meds at all, beware

As for the tank you are talking about - even if the tanl leaks you are getting a good deal. Fixing leaks is pretty straight forward. Simply look at the silicon seals and make sure they are in good shape. If so... even if there is a leak your only a few dollars of silicon away from a fix.

How DO you go about fixing leaks? I have a 55 in which the seals dried out. I'm trying to sell it cheap to a DIY person because I heard that it was a pain to try to fix.

ROYCE although im 100% positive if the leaks in the corner you can just scrape out the existing silicon then just use silicon back over the glass
like i said im not 100% for sure but i seem to remeber reading this somewhere :D
