Maybe a stupid question? watts for a MH.. say a 150 and a 400, besides the strength of the light.. will they visually look different.. say if i put one on the right side of my tank, and one on my left?

Yeah you will definitely notice the difference...

Lower watts is darker, higher brighter. Consider the spectrums as well and the type of halide bulb. HQI or Mogul?
