substrate in an established tank

I wanted to add some fresh crushed coral substrate into my established tank. I rinsed the crushed coral very thoroughly and placed a cups worth of it into my tank when I noticed that the water was already beginning to cloud up.
Do I need to remove all live products from the tank before adding new substrate?

No you don't, just make sure it is well rinsed. Any reason you are using crushed coral instead of a finer grained sand?

I recommend sand instead, coral traps detris in your substate.
