Well after being out of the hobby for the last 5 years, it looks as though time has healed the wounds and faded the memory of all the stress of keeping my 125g tank. My wallet has recovered and is just begging for punishment, & this time I have a better plan
& , so in the near future I will be looking into a 400g 96x30x36 or 515g 96x30x48 tank with an artificial reef stocked with 1 yellow tang, 1 purple tang, 1 spiny box puffer, 1 huma huma & 1 clown trigger. I am looking into aragalive, but am not sure what would be better, a thin layer for ease of cleaning, or a thick layer to get more denitrating? What do you guys think would be the better way to go?
Thanks guys

I voted less than 1" of live sand but you can mix aragonite seeded with a few cups of live sand. I just don't like the way bare bottom looks... too much like fish in a glass box.

Yeah,
I know there are several schools of thought on all this. I am leaning towards a shallow level to help in the clean up. I know a deep bed can help w/ nitrates, but with triggers blowing up sand storms, there is some concern there. I know other than the tangs they are all wasteful messy eaters so I am leaning towards the shallow bed.

2 inches is not a deep sand bed...a deep sand bed is 3 to 4 inches. Personally..I like 2 inches, which is what I have now. JMO

I've always liked a sand bottom around 2" or so, dont like the bare bottom either as it makes it look fake. If you are concerned about waste buildup why not have some Narrs. snails and a couple of Wrasse's that bury themselves in the sand and keep it stired up like the Dragon Wrasse that I had. He was always moving the sand around.
