If you have enough waterflow over the top of your sand you won't get any algae growth or detritus build up and it will look new.

You could always go without a substrate at all...lots of folks are going with a bare bottom look. Personally I like a DSB and if they are properly maintained they work fine and don't look bad. I keep a 6" DSB in my display and the appearence isn't that bad...not bad enough to cause me to remove it or quit using a DSB.

i like to think i have good water movement but my sand looks like crap no algea on it just turning a grey color where should i have my power heads placed i have a 125 gal 72" long

how bad is crushed coral for a substrate what could i do to keep the nitrates down when using it and is it still of for those fish that like to dig up the bottem????
