I just got a jawfish yesterday from swf I'm glad he made it bcs he did look really stressed but now he's digging under a rock in the back of the tank I'm afraid he's going to call this home. I need a suggestion on how to get him out before he gets to comfortable there are lots of places in the front where he can hide & dig but when he got put in the tank he floated to the back right away. If I get him out I need to plug the whole were he's at now. Thanks for any help.

Mine moved three times before he found his spot. Just leave him be and he'll try different rocks until he's happy.
IMO, probably the worst thing you could do is try to make him go to a certain spot. It'll just stress him out. Besides, the more comfortable he is, the more you'll see him!:D

try turning the rock around. They like the ******** of the rocks shape. i did that with mine and his enterance is now right up front

Jawfish like a mild current that will slowly carry food to them and they dont have to fight the current while hovering over their hole. May want to change your powerheads or current flow to be hard where it is now and mild in front and place some rock rubble/pebbles there and make sure sand is deep.

thanks for all the replies I think I will just leave him & chg the current it is pretty strong I have 4" sandmix I put a pvc tube in for him facing up sand & rubble all around but he never got to see it maybe he'll check out the tank I only have 2 clowns & some snails & crabs I dont think they will bother him. thanks again I guess I should just be happy he made it!!! :jumping:  :jumping:  :jumping:

Update:

I've had my jawfish 5 mos now he's still in the front of the tank he likes to watch what's going on in the tank. He comes all the way out of the hole to eat & isn't as scared when people come upto the tank. When his den occationally falls in he always gets out I was afraid he would "drown" but I'm sure in the wild this happens more often then it does in a calm tank. A lot of people think he's ugly but he's my favorite & I think he's cute.
Because he gets scared easily I always wait till he goes to bed & closes his den "door" before doing work in the tank, like changing water etc.
Anyone adding a jawfish to their tank they are really fun to watch but they are work you need to "hand" feed them. I dont mind but if you dont want a needy fish this one may not be for you. Good luck!! Have fun!! Happy fishing!!!

Cool. I want a Jawfish for my little tank. I think they're pretty cute little creatures, and very peculiar behavior too. I prefer animals that are a little "needy"... makes me feel useful
