I highly suggest a tang~! There are lots to choose from but some good ones are yellow, purple or a regal~! But never keep a yellow and purple together for they will fight. Also pygmy angels are great. Like ClownFish said a Coral Beauty is a great choice~!

You'll need someone to keep your gravel clean too. I'd suggest a yellow face gobie. They take mouthfulls of gravel, and sift it through their gills.Very cool......STEVE

I didn't mention my Emperor because I Think this fish is very difficult to keep healthy. Although mine is ok now,I've had more than my share of problems with this fish.Plus they are not only hard to find, but are very expensive.Mine was 78bucks in the store. Newcomers probably should stay away from spending so much on any one fish. Please keep in mind, these are only suggestions of fish we think could flourish in your tank. But please dont rush out and buy any of these fish now. Stay with damsels,or green chromis's for awhile. Most of us(including myself) have tried "pushing it" with sometimes disasterous results.STEVE

Wow Mr. Salty you got a good deal. We both live in Michigan but yet if I wanted to buy an Emperor Angel it would cost me about $180 for one. Also Mr. Salty how much would you have to pay for a Purple Tang? Over here it costs $100 for a small one.

My LFS has a small purple(3") I've talked him down to 50bucks if I want it. Don't think He would make it in my tank though. Lionfish, where in MI are you from??? I know SAMMY wasn't sayin to buy these fish. I was just makin' sure FISHBOY knew we were just suggesting good fish for the future. STEVE

In my neck of the woods a small purple is 150 and even a juvi emperor or queen is at least 175. This is why we turn to the internet!! this site has great deals on all of our fav fish but if you try this quarantine at home and let us know how it turns out.
As far as choosing which fish try starting with a theme like are you looking for a predator tank or a peaceful community tank or perhaps a grumpy old men tank?? What I mean is pick your one most favorite fish in the whole world, and then build around him.
Good Luck

my most favorite fish is the clown triggerfish. what types of fish could i get to go with it.

I know that a clown trigger is very agressive. I've seen A large grouper with one. It all depends I think. One clown trigger may be agressive and another one might not. But they are beautiful and if you tame them they become real sweethearts~! I can pet my friend's trigger but sometimes the trigger thinks my hand is lunch!

My favorite fish that I'll be able to afford is the coral beauty. They cost only 20-25 bucks at the various LFSs in my area. They offer more bang for the buck than any other fish, IMO. Sure, a moray eel would be fun, but no good for a reef. A trigger would be fun too, but not as cool as a coral beauty in my opinion.

In my opinion I would say a Coral Beauty is a great fish all around. Also a Coral Beauty is a heck of a lot cheaper than a Clown Trigger. A trigger also will eat all inverts and is not reef safe.

How's your budget...are you looking to start out cheap? I just setup a 55g tank and have the folowing: 1 yellow tang, 2 clown fish, 4 yellow tailed damsels, 6 yellow wrasses, 1 lawnmower blennie (very cool), and an assortment of shrimp, crabs, hermit crabs, and snails. It cost me about $150.00.

At the risk of sounding "so newby"...what is a lawnmower blennie??? Never heard of one... peaceful???

Yes, in your size tank you could get away with two triggers but perhaps not the exact same type. How 'bout the picasso? Anyway pals for them (I'm not sure triggers make pals exactly, but you know what I mean) might include lions or large angels which can be very aggressive. If you put the triggers in first, subsequent fish should be bigger or meaner. Have fun-picking out fish is the fun part!!

Hey Fishboy -- I like your username! It's funny Clayton hasn't posted on your name cuz he told me he was called that by his elementry school freinds, as I was by mine! What's the story on the fishboy name?
Well more on the subject...
Alot of people have been pushing the coral beauty idea, and I am planning on getting one when the reef bug finally bites hard enough. But since u want a fish only tank, and love clown triggers, I suggest an agressive tank. I think u should get a clown trigger(I'm getting a juvi for my f/o tank eventually), a picasso trigger(I had one, he was the best), a snowflake eel, and maybe a dwarf lionfish. All are predators and will keep each other in check, and plus it's a very cool tank w/o much fishes or work. there's alot of cool fish out there, but stick with what u really would LOVE to see swimming in your tank for years and years. best of luck fishboy,

I got my name from my parents and my friends.. my dad always goes look it's our son the fishboy. i think they call me that because everything i say is about fish, and i always want to go to the LFS and look at the fish because i am so interested in them.
P.S. thanks for the info.

I can relate! I still have a year b4 I even get my driver's permit so I'm always begging my parents to let me go to the LFS just to look at what new fish they got in even if I don't have room for another fish at the time. and i'm constantly annoying friends and family about fish facts, but since i joined this BB i've talked myself out about fish enough to keep it down to mentioning fish only once each second!

Fishboy, I have 2 2" clown triggers together and they're fine-at some point I'm sure they will not get along I just dont't know at what point.

Just a reply to what Kenny just mentioned as far as the Dominos don't get them unless you want them to stay. I used Dominos the first time around and they killed all my other fish. Fortunately the lfs took them back and gave me better community fish. Right now I'm cycling but as soon as I can I will get some Percula Clowns. Personally they are beautiful fish. Also, one day a yellow tang as well.
