we are now planning on building a sump instead of buying one, everyone always says to go as big as you can fit under the stand, so that would be around a 100 gallon for us, but then there would be no room to store stuff, so we are thinking about a 55 gallon, does anyone have any designs of their sumps?? and where did you get baffles?

well i believe the thing is a fuge/sump should be at least half the size of your tank...bigger is better though. I bought some 1/4 inch plexiglass from Lowes and cut my baffles out of it and glued them in with aquairium silicone/glue. here are some pics of mine when i first hooked it up. i went with 2 differant designs that i saw from here. that 45 angle at the top of the first chamber keeps the water from WATERFALLING over to the second baffle thus creating hardly any bubbles this sump fuge is a 30 gal. I also put some little 3/4 inch pieces of the 1/4 inch glass and glued them in the fuge part, so when i do little frags i can put them in there as you can see with my gargonian. Today as a matter-a-fact i am making a spray bar to put in the fuge chamber for better flow. I am simply going to get a piece of tubing and push it onto a 145gph powerhead, then put a piece of PVC piping with 3/8 holed drilled in it onto the tubing coming from the power head.

i saw a pic of that "45" on some guys fuge that he had built for him by his LFS owner in an old thread. i couldnt get in touch with him so i tried just a straight baffle first, and then with the angle...i noticed a huge differance just holding it in there. so went with it. another thing i noticed, i had roughness of water on my last 2 baffles creating some bubbles, i simply rounded the 1/4 glass at the top to create smooth water flow....It worked perfectly...no bubbles at all. hope this helps someone.

where the hose coming from the main tank, there is a filter pad there that i took from my old wet dry, aas of now i have a hang on back skimmer up on the DT, when i can get a good skimmer , i am going to put it where that filter is and do away with the filter...or rework it somehow somewhere else

Here is a pic of mine when I first built it. I made it out of a 20 gallon tank. I am now in the process of building a bigger one with a 30 gallon tank and will be geting rid of the 20.
