Sump noise

Ok, I don't have any pics of this cuz it is just too crude . But here is my setup and my problem. I just hooked up my mag 18 (soon to be a mag 12 the 18 is way too much) and my 1200gph overflow. It is under my 150 with a 10g sump (ya I know it is small but my stand is very crampped underneath...I didn't build it). What can I do to help quiet the overflow supplies to the sump wo compromising flow?? Right now they just "dump" into the sump. I have thought about lining the inside of the stand with foam or something to deaden the sound.. Also, what are your suggestions for getting a bigger sump under my tank? A 10g barely squeezes in throught the door and there is no access from the back. I have thought about getting another 10g and having the 2 tanks drilled to accept a 2" pipe to connect the two. Thanks for any suggestionshelp....

I've just been through the exact same problems over the last couple weeks. First you must find where the noise is coming from, is it only in the sump or is it the overflow too? If only the sump you can add some pvc on the end of your line to extend the waterflow under the waterlevel in the sump - much more quiet. I used 2 45's and a piece of pipe to slow it down even more. If its the overflow then you should build a standpipe for it as this will help a lot too. The one thing that I found made the BIGGEST diffrence for me was adding a ball valve on the overflow line to the sump to restrict flow a little. I know it may sound crazy but it works - believe me. It took me some time to find the sweet spot to have zero noise and still have sufficient flow but works very well when "dialed in"

BTW if you do a search here on standpipes you will find a lot of data, I went with the stockman style so it would fit in my overflow easier.

The noise is in the sump from the water spilling in. I have a standpipe in my hang on overflow box that make sit very quiet..

I assume you have a bulkhead on the sump where the overflow attaches via tubing? If so, maybe try extending the pipe from the bulkhead on the sump?
Extend a piece of PVC from the bottom of the bulkhead farther down into the sump.
I haven't tried it, but it would seem that this would quiet it down, similarly to how the standpipe works in the overflow. Kind of a muffler concept.

indy is it a all glass stand If it is you can cut a board a little longer than the hight of the opening bang it up with a hammer then carefully take out the center brace put a bigger sump in then put the brace back. or even easier jam a rubbermaid container under there. as for noise I have a pro made sump it came with pvc pipes with slots cut in it caped at the end. the water falls in the pipe and thru the slots it is real quiet .hardly any air bubles this way also.

do a search on my name and sump noise and you will find a post on it. With the few things I did, my tank is silent.
(180L, 1-CS100 single 1"overflow, 1-CS102 duel 1"overflow, MAG 24 ect...).

Thanks Jester and to all of those who posted. The stand is a custom stand made out of solid wood. No my over flows are just laying in the sump. They are now under water and I enlarged the holes slightly on my standpipes in my dual 1" overflow. I like the idea of covering the overflow box Jester, I'll have to try it. Now I just need to work on getting the return side a little more quiet. I was thinking of using pipe insulation to see if it works. You can really hear the water going through the PVC. By the way I was using a Mag 18 but Friday I'm gonna go exchange it for a MAG 12. The dual 1" overflow couldn't keep up with the 18 even with it throttled back. I thought with about 4-5 feet of head pressure, 90's and so forth that it would slow the Mag 18 down. No way that pump flows some serious water.. Thanks Again Scott
