Sump, Pump, Skimmer, am I spending to much?

thats alot of money for what is essentially a clear plastic/glass box. a 20 or 29 gallon aquarium in your stand would work quite well as a sump/refugium, and a mag 9 pump can be had for around 50-90 bucks online at various pet sites. This site sells an asm g1 or a g1x, either of which would work VERY well for a 55gallon reef, for around 210 bucks for the g1x. so, about 50 bucks (guess) for the aquarium sump, another 50-90 for the pump, and 210 for an awesome skimmer, grand total 310-350 bucks. Thats a good 390 bucks leftover for you to spend on lighting (if you need it) or livestock.

My diy wet dry/ sump works much more efficiently than the amiracle mr 300 I had bought from the auction site. I finally gave it away. It cost me around 200 used. my diy cost around 60$ at the most....Personally, I would spend money on a R/O unit and a good skimmer rather than on the sump itself...Its really not necessary. Also the diy wet drys are much easier to clean and take apart when necessary. somewher in "equipment" there is a thread "diy wet-dry" with some pictures of my home made wet dry and another member's. I have a typhoon III r/o which works great, an asm g 4x skimmer, and a panworld pump.

um.. 330 is way way crazy of a price for a sump only ... ( and when i mean sump only i mean sump only.. : a vessel that holds the same water as the main tank ) cuzz you can just buy a simple glass aquarium and place it under your tank for a sump.. i mean.. all it need to do is hold water, heater and suchthings.. and i know that you dont have a fuge either.. and imo 330 is still too much for a fuge/sump combo.... i say just go buy the largerst glass tank that you can fit under your tank.. ( you would want a long tank not a tall .. this make it easier for maintence ) then buy 1 peice of glass or acrylice.. and cut it to fit smake right in the middle of your glass aquarium ( the fuge/sump) .. you only want it to be 1/2 or 3/4 the height of the aquarium.. then silicone the crapola out of it... fill one side up with sand/rock and cheato and fill the other side with your equipment.. that is the easiest sump/fuge to make.. and hould only cost you $100.... or you can read up a little bit more on sump/fuge design and make a custom sump/fuge to your need.. even if u had to call out for 1 day of work to make it... you probaly will save yourself the day worth in pay and have exactly what u want.... Seems like a bundle to me. If it where me I would get the largest tank that will fit under or behind the display tank and glue in some baffles. Even another 55 gallon tank with one baffle in the middle making one half fuge one half sump would only run 150 or so.
A couple of 660GPH submersible return pumps would run no more than 125 or so. That leaves a lot of money left over for a top of the line skimmer and miscellaneous fuge and sump items.
This is an area where a lot of money can be saved with just one afternoons worth of fiddling with the tank. On items like this the LFS mark up is at least 75 percent and as much as 150.

Ok, here is some better information. I will try to post picks of the sump tonight.TANK New 55gal with corner overflow and 2 holes that will handle 1500-1600gph.
STAND
one that I built myself. The reason why I am keeping a 55.
SUMP
is a sump with wet/dry filtration is rated for 100g. It looks higher quality than most of the prebuilt sumps I have seen on the web and the price seems about the norm for this sort of thing. Will try to post picks tonight.
PUMP
is "Gen X Pump PCX 40" It's an external pump that (at my distance) be moving around 1200 gph. The problem with this is that I really wanted to be moving closer to 1500 gph, but I don't want to have to tune the flow down. I am guessing the plumbing will be about 4ft with two 45 angles and a T. Is there another external pump that will be better for me? Price: $130

SKIMMER
is "ASM (All Seas Marine) Euro Style G-1x". Rated for up to 150 gal. Very similar to Euro-Reef, uses the same Sedra pump (3500) and needle wheel technology. Price: $234

THANKS!

Seems the best place to get the skimmer would be on this website. You even get free shipping.
As far as the pump. I am leaning more toward the PCX 70 so I can get a good 1500 gph. Is there anything wrong with running that kind of flow through my sump? I am pretty sure it can handle it. It looks like its a little bigger than a 29 gal tank.
