Sump Question

I was at my local fish store and they reccomened doing this....
In a 40 gal tank, Under my tank, divide in half, 1 side with live sand, capulara algea, and live rocks, with a light...and on the other half have skimmer and return pump....Has anyone heard of this? What do u think?

Refugiums ARE GREAT. I would recommend one to everyone if they are trying a saltwater tank at all. There are many reasons why refugiums are great. The Caulerpa Algae does many things. It uses the ammonia and Nitrates to grow, so what that means to you is almost no Nitrates in your water! another reason is Macroalgae in your refugium reduces the occurances of microalgae (nuissance algae) in your main display. you can also put some feather dusters in the sump on LR to help filter the water. put brittle stars in the LS to clean up the detritous that accumulates. a refugium can act as a mini-ecosystem that you can enjoy almost as much as your main tank! I've seen people even raise Bangaii Cardinals in Refugiums! (Large Ones Of course...)

seems like your LFS knows kinda what they are talking about. refugiums are great!!! they are wonderfuly little things!!

I have a sump very similar to what you describe except I added some LR rubble to the sump as well. It has worked very well over the last year.
