iam goin to build my own sump for my 55g. the skimmer i have is a seaclone100 it works fine for me but a sump would add volume also the seaclone can be made into a sump skimmer so thats a plus. and extra plants a rock and sand and suck would help with filtration for sure. plus i can put my damn damsels down in the sump!!. but i would like to make the sump out of a 20g long tank would the water level be high enuff to run the seaclone properly or should the sump be a lil larger? and if i have a return pump that has as much GPH and is getting siphoned out. i wont have to worry about overflow right?? well here is my diagram. all answers and comment would be greatly appreciated.

one thing I would look at is putting the sump in the middle, have the skimmer on one side and the fuge on the other and sump in the middle. then you can adjust the flow as needed for each the fige will need less flow then the skimmer.

no I don't have a diagram, but I do have a few pics posted of the 65 gal. sump that I built this way, if you look at my thread call (125gal project underway) it could give you an idea of what I'm talking about

I plan on doing the same thing with 2 (10 gallon) tanks with an overflow from one tank to the other sump. Problem was determining how to get the water back from my 10 gallon fuge to the sump, but I got a poor man's design with two speciman containers and a syphon hose. At least until I can build a better overflow for the design. This was due to space constraints and there is no possiblity for parol if I pull out the middle brace and my wife finds out...
Even though I give her assurance that braces with hold it..

That is why my next tank I'm going to build the stand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't really determined how to design the supply side as I was thinking about building a pad filter just the inside width of the tank (for filter overflow into the tank), divide the 10 gallon in half with some baffels and the sump. I would like to dump the filter and just use a protien skimmer, but am unsure if it is a good idea to do so. I was recommended to use at least a filter sleave, but taht is just a nitrate trap???
Return will be piped also to the fuge and run off from the overflow will be piped to the bottom of the sump to cut down bubbles.
I like the diagram, but usually when I doodle I make sharks with big teeth....

The first one is exacly how i have mine built. I dont have but 300 gph going in it so it all works. I have all the water from the tank going direcly into my skimmer.

Your design will work if you put the seacloe in the back baffle and create some type of waterfall to the baffle from the skimmer to pop the bubbles.

if anybody has links or other simular designs please show me. will a 20g long be enuff or should i go with a 25-30g. this is the desing i have been designing in my head for a while but i had a couple of cold ones last night
and well i put pen to paper

if you have the room I would go with a 29 gal. gives you more space for a fuge. I built one for my 80 gal. worked out good. half the tank is the fuge, then the sump area is about 7 to 8" wide then a few baffles and the skimmer.
I've seen some skitches on here before of this design, I'll see if I can find something. but the bigger the fuge the better. as far as flow rate what is the gph of your skimmer pump? you want close to 1.5x the skimmer pump gph. and for the fuge around a 8 to 10x turn over rate, so for 15 gal. fuge that would be 150 gal. one other advantage to this design is that the water from the DT goes directly to the fuge and is not skimmed first, this will help the micro algae in the fuge grow better.

so if my overflow box is siphoning at a 600gph rate my seaclone skims at 300 gph my return pump should be atleast 600gph i mean my skimmer cant skim every molicule of water which is y i have L/R, L/S, and plants. so wut iam sayin is should my retun pump match my overfolw box siphon or b a lil more?? here is my new rendering just and extra baffel and moved the filter sock.
oh yeah my cabinets inder my 55g is only 11in wide and 44in long. so how many gallon tank would fit and would b suffice to create this. i figure wutever tank i would have to be a long tank since it is so skinny. i guess around the 25-30g range. the bigger the better!

should i add new L/S new L/R and new plants new water to the sump and plug it in. or should i cycle the sump. because my tank is fully cycled and has been up and running for 5months

I would probably use LR from your tank. Otherwise you might also introduce some hitchers to your ref.
Then you might be able to add some to your tank later.
