Sump Size

I have a 55 FOWLR and would like to include a sump. I have an old 5 gal glass tank, would that be too small or should I build one that will still fit under my stand but have more volume.

do you have wooden stand or iron stand?
IMO 5G is too small for 55G tank. You want to have the sump volume large enough to cover some water from the main tank when the power outage.
I have 10G sump for my 55G.

Could you tell me what exactly you are using to bring the water back and forth from the sump - I have a 10G I want to use on ym 55Gal FOWLR as well.

I have a wooden stand. It will be gravity feed down with an over flow box and power head to pump it back up. I found a great DIY plan for an over flow box made out of PVC.

Make a trip to Wallmart and get the largest rubbermaid tub that will fit under your tank.. should be around $10.
