Sump with no baffles?

You don't have to use baffles. It depends on what you want out of your sump. For example do you want to have a fuge with chaeto or whatever? If so you might want baffles. Or do you need to get rid of micro bubbles. Again, baffles will help.
Point is, there are no set rules with sumps. Set it up based on what your particular needs are. If you are using a sump just to put equipment in (skimmers, heaters, etc.) and to increase your system's water volume, you may not need any baffles.

Well, yes, what I am wondering is whether I will regret it if I don't put any baffles in my sump, like will I be fighting microbubbles. I primarily want it for the extra water volume as well as a place for equipment. Plus it makes water changes so much easier!
This is for a 20g long sump tank for a 40 breeder display.

I run my sumps baffel-less. some tricks to setting it up. when you place your drop from your main tank point it slightly angled into a corner opposite of your return pump. place any equipment and macros Lr etc in between the drop and the return to create obstacles so any microbubbles dont have a straight shot to get to your return. nothing like a wall of cheato to act as a bubble stop. dont place your heater directly next to your return pump, this can overheat your pump.

my sump is diy. I didnt put baffles in, but now I realize I should have... So go ahead and put them in.... At best it will have a minimal extra cost and add a few more minutes to the construction time.

Hi all,
I am new to this site and I saw this forum on baffleless sumps. I am going through the same dilemma right now. Here is what I ended up doing. I have a 150 reef system with what I believe is a 20 gallon or so wet/dry sump. I took all the bio balls, filter drawer and sponge out. I cut the top off it and put my skimmer in that chamber. I put micron socks on the two drains, (where those trickle pipes used to be, I 90'd them downward) because the skimmer didn't like all the bubbles it made without the socks. I had a baffle that I put in originally and took it out. So anyway, I am now baffleless and still testing. I rechecked the water level with the return pump and skimmer off and on and marked each. Probably too late, but hope this helps.
