Sump?

What is a sump? I have a 20 gallon tank so I know I really don't need one. I'm just curious, I do plan on getting a much bigger tank in the next few years.

A plain ol'Sump is just a seperate tank to increase your water amount. You can also put in a filter or heater or protein skimmer (etc) to keep the unsightly equipment out of the DT. The main purpose of a sump though is to increase your water.
Add a fuge to it and it takes on a whole new life though.

Fuge is sorta slang for refugium, which can be a section in your sump, or an add-on reservoir to your main tank. Basically it's a place where you can add live rock/sand and grow micro-fauna and macro-flora without the possibility of something in your tank eating them. Many people grow chaetomorpha (a macro-algae) that can help reduce your nitrates and phosphates by consuming them as water passes through the sump, and also breed copepods, which can be added to the tank as additional clean-up or live food for other fish.
