Sump?

Right now I have a 20 gallon tank with my skimmer and filter hanging on the back of the tank. I'm in the middle of upgrading to a 55 gallon tank this week and I plan to do the same thing, hang my filter and skimmer on the back of the tank.
Do I have to build a sump for a tank that size?
Also I plan on using an emperor 400 bio-wheel filter with my skimmer on the new 55 gallon tank, is this enough filtration?
I'm very new at this still, please advise..Thank you.

Some Day you will want one ( at least I imagine) Much cheaper and way less head ache to at least get a tank ready for it on day one.
my 2 cents.

I've got a 55 RR, that has a 30 gallon sump. I built the sump myself for about 50 bucks. Just as Sign guy said, it adds volume to the system and you can hide all your equipment down there. Is kind of pain in the butt to get the system tweeked and running right. But is worth it in my opinion.
You can find tons of diagrams for sump designs on this site.
