Rule #1 sqays the more water volume the better. if you had a 60 gallon tank with a 55g sump/refugium you would be sitting good. All depends on what you have room for of course.
even a 10g sump/refugium could be made to work. anything is better than nothing.
I'd say being that you are pretty new, I'd read up on how they work and what happens in the event of a power outage before i got too crazy with actually building one.

Ok on a FYI note. The term Refugia was first coined by Dr. Walter Adey of the Smithsonian institute to describe a body of water separate but connected to the main DT where plants and animals can develop without fear of other predators

Just asking,
Where did this info come from? Cause I too have read this however....I have read that another came up with it and it was in reference to birds. Refugia is referenced to other things besides aquaria.

The Reef Aquarium by Delbeek and Sprung and Dynamic Aquaria by Dr. Walter Adey and Dana Riddle.

Dynamic Aquaria I have read. The first and the third edition. I don't recall him saying he coined the term?
The Reef Aquarium, I have not had a chance to read. So I can not say.
In the end its not important. Thank you for replying though. It just interesting how Refugia refers to more then just our tanks.
Burrito,
Pick your poison on the algae. They all are good and do the job. Some come at a higher risk then others. Some need to be in the sand and other don't. As for lighting, A simple CF bulb will do just fine. The kind you get at the home improvement store. The twist style bulbs. Just get the natural daylight and you'll be fine. The 13 or the 23 watt should work.

REFUGIA
“Dr. Walter Adey of the Smithsonian institution first used the term Refugia to describe bodies of water separate from the main display but connected where populations of organisms (plants or animals can develop freely without being preyed upon by fishes (Ady, 1983). The term also applies to places within the tank where these organisms may develop without being consumed directly by the fishes, such as within a stack of rocks or in the sand substrate …………….”
I will dig out my copy of Dynamic Aquaria and add to this post tomorrow
