A sump allows you to increase your water volume which helps stabalize the water. It also gives you a place to put your equipment (skimmer, heater, filter) out of sight so your display tank is just that. It helps with gas exchange since you are also increasing the amount of water suface you have. Makes dosing easier since your not pouring things into the display tank. Water changes and top offs are easier. And best of all it gives you one more thing to tinker with and take up your time.

one other thing that a sump gives you is a few filtration options. The main two out there are the wet/dry system and the miracle mud. Both of these are great options. I would suggest that you check these options out.

The primary function of my sump is:
increase water volume(additional 15-20 gal in my case)
location to run skimmer(EuroReef CS6-2)
means of circulation which allows for removal of powerheads from the display(I run approximately 1200 GPH thru my sump and back to the display via 3 returns)
Means of feeding water to my refugium(I run a large refugium from my sump with about 100 GPH flow rate(I use a ball valve to regulate the flow)
Remote location to perform water changes/drip additives.
