Sump

i want to create a sump for my 30 gallon with a 10 gallon sump but im not sure how they work...
how can i make one...

i have a 30 gallon tank
protein skimmer
fuval 304
uv ster
water pump
it has about 20-30 lbs of live rock
crush coral
no sand
one of my problems is with the amount of fish i have 10 fish
i had a leather coral but it just died
i have yellow plyop
button
bubble
some other stuff but im not sure what the exact name it is but its under soft corals
also an aneome carpet
