sump

Hello,
My room mate and I are looking to start a salt water fish tank this coming summer, we are trying to find out about some stuff. I am going to buy a 75 gallon overflow tank and I have some questions about the sump. I want to get a wet/dry filter and a protein skimmer for filtration. Could anybody tell me how these two items work and how they would be used in the sump... an order of operations sort of thing. Also, would these two meathods of filtration be enough after the tank has cycled or is there more that I will need.

ps. saw in the local fish shop that they had plants growing in their sump to help with Nitrate? Anybody know anything about that.
thank you

forgot to mention and it might be helpful. This will be a reef tank, live rock and all that good stuff
