its simply just a additional tank or rubbermaid tub under your tank that you can house equipment in such as wet/dry systems, skimmers, heaters, and other things, it also makes you tanks bigger by adding more water, an overflow and return pump are required to circulate water between the sump and main tank

in other words its just a big wet/dry filteration systems for usually bigger sized tanks like 55gal or more. may-be expensive but i heard it works the best
