Yeah...I was really into the idea of super nano tanks till I found out you have to tend to them several times a day, no exceptions. I do think they look really cool but so little room for error! I think red sea and Tom's make little pico kits if you're still interested...

I have a Tom's three gallon nano and it's been no problem for me. I do a water change about every two weeks and top off as needed. i only have one small nano goby, one sexy shrimp and a few crabs in it for livestock. Also have 3 mushrooms. Plan on putting a small zoo frag in and that's it. I love this tank. It sits on my desk at work and is very relaxing. I feed lightly.
The only thing negative I can say about the Tom's tank, is on the light fixture. The fixture is one piece and when the light burns out, they will sell only the whole fixture. This not only sucks and is expensive but is environmentally unsound. To get around that, I took all the screws out and dremeled out the glue holding the light in place. Then I was able to replace the light with a coralife bulb. If you go this route, just be prepared to dremel the socket part of the fixture so that the new bulb will fit. I was able to make a good fit and have had no further problems.
Hope this helps. Don't have any pictures cause I have never been able to figure out how to take pictures of a tank.

I also live in NM and I top off about once a week. I do have a top on mine though.
Did you decide what you are going to get yet?
