I have just started assembling my super skimmer, and it seems to have an extra part. I cant find mention of it in the directions anywhere. anyone have a clue as to what it is?

I am talking about the piece that is just below the bag of plastic screws.

Looks like a valve of some kind. I have the css220 model and I have not seen that piece before.

yeah, I am not sure what it is either. I am sort of thinking this was bought and returned, since it was missing the tubing and silencer, and has this extra valve in it.

Looks like the silancer may already be on it just above the drain (maybe). That is a valve that comes with that rio pump it looks like to me. I wouldn't use it because you would want it wide open anyways.
Is this the 65? I got the 220 so I may be way off.

it is the valve that goes from the pump to the black hose. directions say to use it during the breack in period but after three days it should remain open

Yea, its used to reduce flow of water down since when its new its not really making a lot of bubbles, and can possibly make it leak at the adjustment knob. The thing is it was intended for use with the "old" style skimmer body which were notorious for leaking around the red adjustment knob. On the new style skimmer body with a seal on that red adjustment knob leaks are not gonna happen, and that piece with the valve built into it is not really needed, but its still included. One thing I would make usre is that yu have the NEW styule skimmer body. Its not impossible to order a CSS 65 today and still wind up having a old style shipped as stock lays in store houses and vendors for long periods of time. The CSS skimmers at one lfs here in town are all OLD style since they do not sell many of them at $210 for a CSS65 ;-)
The new style skimmer hsa a series of raised bumps on the top of the red adjustment knob. The old style simple has a falt topped adjustment knob voild of any bumps. If yu habve the old style call coralife and tell em you have a leaky skimmer and want a replacement skimmer body,. they will send one free of charge.

also, i am not sure why there is a venturi air inlet on the output tubing area. do i run the airline from the pump intake into the output tubing? Is it just me, or are these directions damn horrible?

that is just a inlet valve if you conect the it with the air hose from the pump the skimmer will over flow

Thats not an air fitting

[hr]
on thr eoutlet tube. Its a bleeder

[hr]
to help eliminate air inthe system and reduce micro bubbles. Do not attach anyhting to the outflow

[hr]
. Its not a venturi either if yu look at it close its merely a baffle type deal to keep water fro pushing up during normal use. If you get water coming out of that hole you have your outflow tube too far inthe water. It (outflow tube) shoul dbe at or slightly above the tanks max water level. Just put that inlet valve deal aside and don't worry about it. Adjust the red knob way down low to adjust flow.
