Sure-Flow Upgrade Kit

I plan on using 2 maxijet 1200 powerheads in my 50. I will modify them with the sure flow upgrade kit. This will give me 2100 gph from each powerhead. Is this way too much, or will the fact that they are more like wavemakers make them suitable and not cause such direct straight ahead flow?

If you have sand i would use the smaller props and even then that may still cause a sandstorm.I had 2 in my 75 with the bigger prop and i could never adjust them to not cause a sand storm.I eventually had to use the smaller props.

i bought an mj 400 when i first got into saltwater, and i hated it. i tossed it in the stand and forgot about it. it was just too weak. then i saw the 1600 mod for it and it was dirt cheap so i figured why not give it a shot? turns out i love it. very wide strong flow, and with the magnet mount its really easy to place somewhere it wont cuase a sandstorm in my tank. i have never had a problem with it either, but i have seen other people say theres starts spinning backwards upon startup, but you just have to turn it off and plug itback in most the time and its fixed.

I had the same experience as Veni. I have 2- 1200s in my 75 with Sureflow Kits. The white props (2100 gpm) were way too much and kicked up the substrate. I put the lower flow ones in and they work great. It still took a while to adjust even with the lower flow propellers.

I bought 2 kits for my MJ 1200's and I have to say it made a world of diffence. I aimed them at each other and it started ripping into the sand in my 125,in the end I placed one aimed toward the back glass and the other at the front and up. It might be a bit much for your tank try a smaller mod or aim them up. Good luck I hope this helps.

I really dont think you can ever have to much flow, but if you have very fine sand then you might end up with a storm. Most likely They will be ok, just mess with them a little to find an angle that wont

with your tank to much.

I would use two maxijet 400-900 with the smaller propeller. The 1200 is only quiet when using the large prop but thats alot of darn flow. I tried one in my 30g and I mean there was no were I could point it without sand flying around somewhere. I figure two in a 55 would have the same issue. I bought a maxijet 400 and used the small prop (1400gph) and its still powerful but more manageable. I think with two in that configuration would work well. If you use the large prop you'd probably have to use one and get a Koralia 1 or 2 to hit the bottom of the side its positioned that doesn't get hit that well (the middle, back and far side get hit plenty with flow). I have a K1 aimed towards and underneath where the maxijet mod is. it also keeps sand tornado's from forming under the maxi sureflow which is causes sucking in water from underneath (yes even positioned at the top of the tank). the shroud has a solid area that will prevent the sand tornado if faced down but then you get air twisters from above. it needs two solid areas for above and below.
