I am getting ready to purchase a Aqua C Remora skimmer for a 55 gal FOWLR tank. Can anyone make some comments on whether the surface skimmer box is necessary?

I just purcahsed a remora but did not get the surface box because it is too big and unsightly in my opinion. The box will increase your skimming output.
I forgot to mention you may wish to upgrade to a larger collection cup with the remora and a drain attachment. The site where I purcahsed the skimmer charged me 10 bucks more for the larger cup.
It is big and bulky but I love mine. I don't have overflows and I hate the protein film that build up on the surface, the preskimmer box takes care of it. It also eliminates the micro-bubbles.
