surge device, please help....

i am planning on installing a "toilet flapper" type surge device on my 55 gal. tank. i plan on plumming it like a closed loop system so that it is completely independent from my sump/fuge. i am not sure if i should make the hole for my overflow to the sump larger to compensate for the surge, or if it will be fine since it is plummed like a closed loop. any ideas would be greatly appreciated so that i dont flood my home.
thanks,
russ
