I know the survival rate of juvinile blue tangs are really bad, but what about purple tangs?
also, are they hearty tangs?
I know tangs are ich magnets, but how is the purple tang?

Ive had my purple tang 4 about a year now in my reef and its doubled in size being about
3" now.Yes they do get ich just like all tangs but ive found out that once established in the tank they are a hardy fish.Mine eats anything you put in the tank....

I had had mine over 4 years. Its around 5 inches now. The problem with Purples IMO is they get HLLE easier than other tangs but can get ick just like any one of them. Look for a heathy one.

so, bear with me I'm still fairly new. I read somewhere that purple tangs require a bigger tank than yellows. Why is this if they both get to be about the same size?

purple tangs are more aggressive than yellow's...
But know that tangs do need larger tanks. I personally suggest atleast a 100 gallon for the tangs.
i put a yellow in a 55 once...he looked really stressed all the time because he wanted to swim and he couldn't....put him in my 125 and boy was he a happy camper.
again it depends on the fish and the person, but i personally would not put a tang in a tank smaller than a 100 ...after seeing the results.... but again i also have 4 tangs in my 125 which most people thing is nuts.... but oddly they're all friends at this point...no aggression.
