The water I collect, may or may not be the right temperature when I collect it....but it IS the right temp when I add it to my tank...I either heat it or cool it depending on the temp. I also make sure the SG is the same as my display.

Yes..that is correct. As long as you are collecting PROPERLY. I DO NOT want to mislead ANYBODY on this. I have been collecting NSW for about 2 years.. I only collect on INCOMING tide 1-2 hours before dead high tide....I collect in an inlet..so the water is rushing in...nice clean, fresh water...I also collect from a submersible pump 6-10 feet below the surface,so I will avoid any gas/oil residue on the surface of the water. I have had great sucess with this method.

sweetness, then we might just be taking a trip to the beach with about a dozen 5 gallon buckets LOL
I would not advise throwing a bucket with a rope attached to it.... oil/gas/gunk floats on the surface...that is why I collect 6-10 feet down...OIL does not sink.

ahhhhhhh, we might just have to go to the beach at some point and do just this very thing, but, the nice thing about the beaches we go to, they are actually, well, to be honest, cleaner than the beaches ive seen in florida, i lived in that area my whole life :p

Boswell, you could always go grab a sample and test the water (Ammonia/Nitrite/Nitrate/Phosphates/Calcium/Alkalinity/pH/silicates)
Probably the most important would be Phosphates, as I'm pretty positive you won't get readings for NH4, NO3, NO2. If you want the water for a reef tank, Cal and Alk next.

So do you pre filter this inlet water before you add it to your display tank? I'm less then 30 minutes from Ponce Inlet and I have to tell you that whether I were taking water from there or Matanzas Inlet north of me that I would be worried about whats in that water. I guess If it is filtered then it might be ok.

Heres where I collect. The page is refreshed every few minutes. High tide was at 7:55 this morning and tonite at 7:56. If I was collecting today...I would be there about 2 hours ahead of high tide. If you scroll through the pics you can tell when high tide is..the water will turn a beautiful shade of blue and be CRYSTAL clear.(as long as there are no large waves stiring sand up)

How do you do this ? I mean the cords on the pumps are usually not ten foot long so how do you run an extension to it without it being in the water ? I ask because I am tryign to figure out how not too kill myself and get water from ten foot out.

Where you located ? I am in F section in palm coast and lived in saint augustine. The water at matanza right off the beach is used or the university rescue center and for marineland so what would be the problem with it other than you might get a shark grab ahold of ya.... Seems they are thick thru there.... I Have read where most people use buckets and they have no problem with oil or fuel ad one guy has one it for 30 straight years according too someone on here or another forum and he has never had any issues.

All public Florida beaches are monitored regularly for contaminants here in Naples they do it every other day. Contact your local fish and wildlife agency find out when they test and what they test for. I personally mix my own saltwater but I have sand collected off shore for my refugium and have not had a problem

I am in Boynton Beach..I collect at the Boynton inlet. The inlet is where boats can make there way from the intracostal to the ocean...there are a few inlets down here. The inlet itself is about 40 feet across and a few football fields in length. I collect by using a submersible pump...connected to a 1000 watt inverter on my truck. The pump is secured to a pool cleaning "pole" and a garden hose is connected to the pump....the hose is ran into a brute can in the bed of my truck. I am able to PARK my truck within 10 feet of the water ...so it makes it very easy to collect. PS ... I would gladly make a how to video...Im just not sure how to load it. ..I have a camcorder, but it uses a mini DV tape..Can I post from that??
