I am in the process of cycling a 125g tank with 160 lbs of dead rock and 20 lbs live, an FX5 canister, and a couple powerheads. I was unable to have a sump because the stand I have does not have the room. I just got the SWC Xtreme HOB skimmer and the thing is so loud there is now way I can use it in my living room. The venturi pump on it makes a grinding and vibrating sound that is VERY loud. Is this normal at the start up of these pumps and will it quiet over time, or does it sound like the pump might be defective? It does produce a nice froth, and seems to pump the water thru as it should. I heard very good things about this skimmer and that's why I spent 450 dollars on it. I want the best I can have since I couldn't do a sump. I come to this site for all my aquarium advice and thank you in advance for your help!

Sounds like your HOB is defective, I would call the manufacture and get there advice or read reviews on it to See of others are having the same issue. I use a CPR NOB skimmer with very min noise. Hope everything works out for you.

Thanks. It isn't the pump because I took it off and ran it in my r/o water and it was silent. It seems it it vibration where the pump connects to the intake side of the pump. Is there anything I can use to lessen the vibration? Would putting vasoline around the pump connection and intake connection help? I'm at a loss. Other than the racket the pump works awesome! :). Any advice is appreciated!
